Le soluzioni SD-WAN di Tiesse accelerano la crescita di Mooney: prestazioni e sicurezza su misura

Mooney, an Italian fintech leader in personalized payment, mobility and proximity banking services and technology solutions, controlled by Enel and Intesa Sanpaolo, is distinguished by its extensive network of 40,000 points of sale and is a true point of reference for millions of customers. With Mooney it is possible to make daily payment transactions – bills and pagoPA -, use proximity banking services – cash withdrawal and deposit, wire transfers -, reload prepaid cards, use mobility-related services – transportation tickets, parking and electronic toll collection, through the MooneyGo app -, and access Enel Group’s electricity, gas and fiber offers. In an increasingly competitive market, Mooney’s services rely on a flexible, secure and optimized network that can support growth and ensure business continuity for its users.

To meet these needs, Mooney chose to partner with Tiesse, a leading Italian company in the design and manufacture of routers and advanced networking solutions, adopting Tiesse routers and SD-WAN technology.

In collaboration with Tiesse, Mooney has introduced a solution for Software Defined connectivity to further optimize performance in all those contexts for which, in the face of adverse conditions, there were unacceptable performance degradations.

The solution for Mooney: smarter, more dynamic network

Thus, one of the distinguishing elements of the SD-WAN solution chosen by Mooney is the use of Tiesse routers to implement a Hub & Spoke configuration. Each point of sale (Spoke) is connected to the public network via:

  • Mobile connection via 4G interfaces integrated on the routers;
  • Internet connection via external modem or internal xDSL port.

This configuration allows for improved network resilience. In case of failures or outages on one of the connections, the system automatically switches to another path, ensuring business continuity.

In addition, Mooney’s central locations (Hubs), spread across a primary and a secondary data center, provide additional redundancy by providing four alternative paths for communications between the outlets and the main office.

Key benefits: efficiency, security and performance

Tiesse’s proposed SD-WAN solution is also distinguished by a unique approach, enhanced by the concept of “Distributed Intelligence.”

The innovation of Distributed Intelligence

The distinctive feature of the solution lies in the ability of each router to operate as an autonomous “intelligent node” within the network. Thanks to Distributed Intelligence, each router is able to make measurements about the quality of the link in use, identifying from time to time the best performing path for data traffic.

Traditional SD-WAN solutions, while providing security and reliability, have some structural challenges. For example, they require the adoption of dedicated hardware, which is often expensive, and tend to become economically unsustainable as the network expands. In addition, the measurement of physical link quality typically relies on external probes that introduce additional traffic and further dependence on third-party devices. Finally, these are generally closed solutions that limit operational flexibility.

Tiesse’s innovative approach represents a significant evolution in this area: each router adheres to centrally established network policies and acquires the ability to autonomously adapt to changing network conditions, dynamically modifying routing to ensure optimal performance.

A secure and dynamic infrastructure

Another key aspect of the solution is the data transport infrastructure, which is based on encrypted and dynamic tunnels. This technology allows the SD-WAN network to be completely separated from the underlying transport network, ensuring that data is transmitted securely and in the best available path.

The solution’s independence from the transport network gives Mooney a major resilience advantage: any changes or issues that arise in the underlying network can be managed and overcome without impacting service. The result is a solution that provides optimized response times and real-time adaptation to events, while maintaining high standards of operational efficiency and reliability.

Through a combination of distributed intelligence and encrypted, dynamic tunnels, Tiesse’s network infrastructure constantly adapts to changing network conditions, keeping operations at peak efficiency. As a result, Mooney can transport its data securely and quickly to the services it needs without delay or disruption, ensuring a smooth and seamless experience for the end customer.

In addition, the solution offered by Tiesse is highly scalable at the enterprise level: the dynamic tunneling mode used makes it possible to connect thousands of routers to the infrastructure without burdening or slowing it down. In the case of Mooney, where the number of equipment involved has grown greatly over time, it was decided to double the collection HUBs in order to increase the redundancy and overall flexibility of the network.

As Mooney’s IT Infrastructure & Operation Manager [Pinto Gori] points out:

Thanks in part to our collaboration with Tiesse, our distributed network infrastructure is now a dynamic system capable of responding quickly to our company’s growth and security needs. The adoption of Tiesse’s technology has enabled us to intelligently optimize traffic, improving not only the reliability of our network, but also its resilience and control through more advanced monitoring tools. Tiesse’s added value has been instrumental in achieving these goals.”

Tiesse is confirmed as a strategic partner for companies seeking advanced network solutions that combine high performance, security and sustainability.
